What's On My Mind?

This was something I challenged myself into-- a project I gave myself. Aside from writing stories about my life and others, I decided to take a different route. As I have mentioned, in our pursuit of our unending hopes and undying dreams, we need to experience something. This is why I like to challenge myself.

So I was watching this movie, "The Lakehouse", and I came up with a decision to make a review about it. That was how it all started. What I can tell you is I have learned from the experience. One thing I learned about making reviews on movies or shows I watch is, I get to know the characters more and I reflect on the situations they encounter. This (learning) is one of the things which help me do the things I do-- writing, blogging, and story-telling. I learn things whenever I write about them and at the same time, I hone my skills as a writer.

The Lakehouse
Life is only travelled once. Today’s moments may be tomorrow’s memories. The movie Lakehouse depicts the story of two people who fell in love through a time difference of two years-- a past and a future. Alex (Keannu Reeves) and Kate (Sandra Bullock) proved to the world that love could overcome any distance and time no matter what the consequences are. For Kate, life with Alex would have been a memory yet Alex sees the situation as a moment in time leading to what we call destiny. It is Alex who gets to experience the happening moment. Kate on the other hand treasures these moments as memories. The movie revolves on the plot which shows how two people met and got to know each other better. It’s amazing really, how two people could fall in love with each other, dating through a mailbox. Just goes to show you that the simplest things in life are taken for granted. The most exciting and breath-taking part was when Kate warned Alex through the mailbox not to get near her when she was at the park. It was nice and sweet of her to inform Alex of the situation, change the fates, and save his life. Alex was about to die that moment but was saved by Kate’s note. Alex survived and they met at this intriguing rendezvous, the lakehouse.
There are many lessons we could learn from this experience. One has to sacrifice to make the future better if not the best. Alex was aiming to make friends with Kate and make her fall in love with him before tried to get near her so as to execute his purpose. He however failed when he wasn’t able to cross the street safely to where Kate was sitting. It was tragic for Alex because he wasn’t able to get near Kate because of an accident. What’s exciting is that through an old mailbox by the lakeside, they were able to communicate two years after. What we could learn from here is the fact that distance or time could not hinder two people when they fall in love. Regardless of death, still love and memories prevail, even when you haven’t seen the people you love for a long time. The lessons in this exceptional movie are bound to be happening in real life. True love can be communicated through distance and time.
Sacrifices mean a lot to anyone and what the future holds. Also that whatever wonderful thing you do now may be instilled in other people’s hearts and that life itself is a challenge we ought to face. The love portrayed in this movie makes us realize what we lost, what we had, and what we’ve taken for granted. It makes us realize that sometimes there are no more next times, no time outs, and no second chances.
As mentioned earlier, we travel in life only once and whatever we do, our future is the consequence of what we do in the present. Thus, we have to make the best out of our days, to do what we have to do as human beings doing well in the eyes of God. We should risk ourselves under the guidance of God. His blessings are help us through whatever obstacles and challenges life throws out. We dream and aim high then the future take its toll. We dream and wake up to make it happen. We think, analyze then shape our future. We should learn from our mistakes because they make us rethink life. It’s for our future’s best. Mistakes would not count in the future if they have molded us into what we are. We should live life to the fullest for we may not be given second chances to live a better life or to change the wrong deeds we have done. Instead of just keeping quiet and doing nothing to solve existing problems, we should make steps to fulfill our goals and solve our problems.
The movie makes us think that life is a fairytale—full of magic, exciting and vivid. But that was before. Now we know that there’s more to life than just happily ever after. We've gotten wiser and we now know that no fairy can lead us to a happy ending. We decide, we struggle, and somehow we begin to understand that we have the power to make each day better than yesterday. That’s why we ought to carve our own path and set the milestones in our life.

My Girl

Sacrifices mean a lot to anyone and what the future holds. This and the fact that hiding and making a living out of a lie makes it much more difficult to live. Yet when these sacrifices mean a lot to family, what would be more worth living than to make the people you love happy? This may be what the Korean drama "My Girl" depicts. The story starts when Gong Chan (Lee Dong Wook) meets the lively and beautiful Yoo Rin (Lee Da Hae). He finds out that she has connections to his missing cousin, whom his grandfather has been searching for. He asks Yoo Rin to lie about being his long lost cousin until he can find his real cousin. She approves, but soon their feelings for each other get in the way of their plans. On the other hand, Gong Chan's friend, Jung Woo (Lee Joon Ki) falls for Yoo Rin while Gong Chan's ex-girlfriend, Seo Hyun (Park Si Yeon), a pro tennis player, tries to win Gong Chan back. Will the two (Gong Chan and Yoo Rin) ever tell each other how they feel? Will Gong Chan ever find his real cousin?
Life itself is a challenge we have to face. Love on the other hand is a different story. To others, love may be a challenge. To the people who believe in happy endings, it may be heavenly. To skeptics, it may be a lie. Yes, falling in love may be complicated yet what makes it worth having is the challenge and the happy ending. Yoo Rin once mentioned to Jung Woo that you can lie about chilli or pepper being very hot as you chew on it but you can never lie about love. You can not hide or ignore what you feel. According to Yoo Rin, you cannot argue with love. Jung Woo proved the point when he could not hold what he felt for Yoo Rin. Seo Hyun did the same for Gong Chan. Gong Chan and Yoo Rin proved this point too when they confessed their love for each other. It really isn't a matter of feeling for the other but on how one expresses it to the other. Either way, it is marvelously wonderful when you know someone loves you against all odds. Yoo Rin may be right for those who believe in love but to those who are skeptical, it may sound pathetic. As for me, though it sounds pathetic, I still believe Yoo Rin is right. You can never argue with love. When fate throws it at you, you've got nothing to do but to cherish that feeling and share it to the world. It's there. Why hide it and ignore it when you can share it with others? Because you are pained by it? Yes, love may hurt and scar and so we call it a challenge. When you get hurt because of love, just take it as one of the countless experiences in life and cast the hurt as an inspiration for future conquests rather than taking it as a failure or a disappointment.
One has to sacrifice to make the future better if not the best. In this case, the virtue of truth-telling was sacrificed for the sake of love. Love is not only defined as a warm deep feeling towards the opposite gender but it may also be a feeling for family, friends, other people. The love Gong Chan showed his grandfather is an example of love for family. He went through a lot of difficulties just to find his lost cousin, a grand daughter his grandfather had been searching for years to the point of hiring someone to pretend to be his cousin while he continues to search for the real one.
I would understand why Gong Chan had done this and why Yoo Rin accepted the deal. Gong Chan loved his grandfather so much and thus was forced to hire someone to stand in as his cousin when he saw his grandfather writhing in pain and giving up in his death bed. It was then that his grandfather's condition improved until he was able to be discharged from the hospital. I also understand Yoo Rin's intentions, although she's really deceptive. Making a living out of a lie? Yes, she was. Though she refused Gong Chan's offer at first but then out of pity of Gong Chan's situation and his grandfather's condition, she finally accepted the deal. It was also better for her at the time since her father had been getting into trouble with gangsters, loan sharks and was even sent to prison.
Yoo Rin was handling more problems than she even realized. She never thought about how hard it was to leave when their plan was finished. It was even harder to keep from being discovered. In the long run, Gong Chan and Yoo Rin did what was good for their families though it was difficult on them. I believe that in due to their love for their families, they did what was right although the connotation of living a lie was bad enough to say what they did was wrong. But what would Gong Chan have done if his grandfather had died without lying to his grandfather? What would have Yoo Rin done if she could not help her father from his loans and other matters? Wouldn't Gong Chan feel angry at himself and thus may lead to his destruction as the company director? Wouldn't Yoo Rin feel guilty that Gong Chan's grandfather had died because of her and her father would never come out of hiding from loan sharks? Isn't it better then that they had done what they have done? Well, the answers to these questions would lie upon you, dear readers. What would you have done if it were you in their shoes?
